Cocaine addiction starts out as fun. In my last post I talked about how people start cocaine for the short-term benefits such as increased strength and decreased appetite. However, they may not take into account the long term problems.

Long-term cocaine addiction effects are noticeable as tolerance builds. Since cocaine is highly addictive, it can lead to major health problems. Some of the these problems include heart disease, heart attacks, respiratory failure, strokes, seizures, and gastrointestinal disorders. Other physical symptoms include convulsions, nausea, blurred vision, chest pain, fever, muscle spasms, and coma.

As taking cocaine becomes increasingly important, behavior changes with lying, cheating, stealing, missing work and denying cocaine use, becoming obvious. While these behaviors do not stem directly from cocaine use, these cocaine effects are usually found because of  the cocaine addiction lifestyle.

Cocaine addiction often starts because of the short-term benefits that can be attained through cocaine use. Cocaine gives extra strength and endurance for physical work.

Another cocaine effect, appetite suppression, is very important for people trying to lose weight or Keep a low weight. Fashion models have used cocaine in order to remain thin. Cocaine users often don’t eat for days. If this behavior is maintained it can cause cocaine addiction.

Addiction and recovery

I remember a story about a friend of the family whose son was  addicted to heroin. One day the young man came home and  demanded money at knife-point from his father. His father was a strong a man and wrestled the knife away from him. The father, fearing that his son might kill someone, called the police on his own son. Then he got his son into a rehabilitation program and eventually the son recovered and came to work in his father’s business. He made a good life for himself, got married and raised a family and things went well.

What I want to say is that sometimes you have to take drastic measures to help friends or family who have an addiction. Many times they can’t help themselves, so we have to be there for them.

Addiction and withdrawal: Sugar

About Addiction and recovery from sugar, Addison Fletcher was kind enough to suggest adding the mineral niacin to one’s diet. She said that it cuts down cravings and I’m all for that. I have to look this up, but it seems like a good idea because G-d gave us everything that we need through eating and living properly, ie naturally.  I know that I don’t eat well enough, but I do take  a multivitamin. Thanks again Addison

Addiction and Recovery: Xanax Withdrawal

Addiction to xanax is  a reality.  I was talking with a doctor about a friend of mine who was taking xanax and just stopped taking it. He started having panic attacks and and a lot of bad physical, withdrawal symptoms.  Within  a day he was back on it. Anyway, the doctor told me that these psychological drugs need to be tapered off over a 2 – 3 month period. I was shocked. It just a relaxer drug, it’s not cocaine or heroin! Apparently, the body becomes dependent and so does the mind. These drugs create a “psychological dependency” and you can get into serious trouble if you quit xanax cold turkey. who woulda thought it? as my father used to say.

Marijuana Addiction and Recovery.

Marijuana Addiction, or long term use, has only a small effect on its users.  They loose a little memory and learning ability, but their ability to think is usually unaffected, according to scientific studies.

Yesterday, I wrote that children and teenagers who use have a marijuana addiction have a higher drop out rate and do less well than non-users. I think  that this is because during childhood and teenage years, children go through so much emotional growth. This demands a lot of strength and involves much turmoil. At this stage of life, I believe that there may be a tendency to run away and marijuana addiction may just side track the youth from dealing with the issues in a full manner. Therefore , the child deals improperly and grows up with a crooked personality.
